Tipping and Giving in Ireland
OK. Americans are generous but big tips (15, 20 per cent) are not expected. Some people do not tip.
Here’s what I do.
I find out the bill for the credit card machine they are holding and maybe it’s 41.50. I say, “Make it €45.” In other words, round up to the next 5 anywhere, or 10 if the service has been nice or you are in a posh place.
As for street people in Cork, I am generous. I ask for names, and exchange a few sentences. I give pocket change or an occasional fiver. If I have nothing loose or small I say, “I’ll have to see you next time, I’m sorry.“
I wear a red beret most of the time here, so they kind of know me. I love Cork’s homeless, who are often mentally ill or damaged in some way. I let my heart and instincts dictate.
Cork Penny Dinners has fed the homeless in Cork for decades, which is why this concert is for them. ❤️
